People are commenting with surprise and delight about the refusal of Mumbai Muslims to permit the burial of Islamist terrorists in a Muslim cemetery. The identification between “Muslim” and “terrorist” has been routine, even among many of us who ought to know better.
There’s a relevant YouTube video I’d like to promote here. It shows American Muslims of all ages, each holding a hand-lettered sign that reveals something about them. Simple idea, nicely done.
And if nothing in the video surprises you, maybe this will. When I first saw it, I didn’t realize that the video’s country/western sound track is also by a Muslim. His name is Kareem Salama — not the likeliest name for a country singer. His parents are Egyptian, but he’s lived his whole life in Oklahoma. You can tell.
